Har sett varianter med gummi! Vaxat/impregnerat tyg knutet om foten borde ge ungefär samma skydd. Då kan man dessutom lätt knyta av och byta tyget när det slitits ut.

Personligen skulle jag akta mig för att gå i bara tovade/filtade skor utomhus. De blir skitiga, och skiten går inte bort, och de blir till slut blöta.
Men yllet har de underbara egenskapen att det kan värma även om det är blöt och kan ta 70% av sin egen vikt innan det på allvar känns bölt.

Jag har aldrig gott i ylletofflor och de som brukade dem hemma i den kalla nord (Norrbotten) hade dem som innetofflor på vintern, när golven är kalla. Så länge snön är torr och kall, kan de även funka utomhus, men så fort the blir nollgradigt, glöm det.

Dock användes och används tovade innersulor i skorna, och det är varmt och gott. Man får det mjukt under foten, och då kylan kommer underifrån är det viktigast att isolera nedåt.

Så mitt skog och mark tid lyder. Lädersko/stövel, väl infettad utanpå, men ha gärna en redigt tovad sula inuti. En innersko av vadmal är inte heller fel... Tänk bara på att skorna skall vara lite stora så man får plats med allt.

Våra förfädrer och förmödrar visste i allmänhet mycket väl vad som funkade bäst, så jag tror att det är bäst att följa deras råd.

Men om du verkligen inte vill ha skinn, så skulle jag ge näverskon en chans. Med vadmalssula och/eller innersko av vadmal, så fryser du nog inte i första taget.

Mycket intressant diskussion!
Jag har ett tag velat försöka göra tovade skor med näversula, men har hitills inte hittat någon som säljer läder. Får väl försöka ta reda på hur man tar näver från björkar utan att skada dem, och få tag på det själv. Borde näversulan tovas in i själva skon, eller sys på utanpå?

Näver tar man enklast på försommaren men den stadigaste nävern tar man i töväder efter en kylperiod på vintern. Traditionellt har man tagit sulnäver på vintern. Man får inte ta näver utan markägarens lov. Slöjddetaljer brukar sälja näver, bra om man har bråttom.

Vad gäller fastsättning av sulan har jag ingen aning.

Fyndet i fråga var den sk Dannikekvinnan som finns utställd på Borås museum, dateringen är sent 1600-tal. Arkeologen/konservatorn torde vara Sara Fritsch - och anledningen till att jag vet detta är att jag under våren rekonstruerat tyget i Dannikefyndet, och läst rapporten om skorna där Per står omnämnd! [:D] Världen känns bra liten ibland...
