Den kallas här för rödmetall och har beteckningen SS 5204, eller JM1. Den innehåller bly, tenn och zink förutom kopparn, och motsvarar ganska bra de metallanalyser jag har sett på vikingatida smycken. Du har rätt där om att det är en soppa av legeringsämnen, och mycket av det har nog varit av slump på den tiden. Emellertid om man ser på mitt inlägg ovan undrar jag om det går att få upp zinkhalten så högt som till 23,3% utan att kunna kasta i rena zinkbarrar i smältan.

Etter hva jeg har sett av messinglysekroner er de fleste av dem ikke i ren messing, men i en finfin blanding av alt mulig rart. Som regel noe gulere enn RG5 og rødere enn vanlig messing, hvilket skulle tyde på en skikkelig "altmuligsuppe" av kopper, tinn, sink og bly. Bly er kjekt for å øke flytbarheten.

Jag har läst på lite sedan sist och hittat "kopparlegeringar" som beskrivning på många av de vikingatida fynden. Bla ett handfat:)
Jag har aldrig tyckt att mässing hör hemma i vare sig vikingatid eller medeltid. Men jag får lyfta på hatten och tacka. Det blev genast lättare att vara viking:) Även om jag tycker brons är snyggare...

Zinkhalten varierar mellan faten men ett SHM27296:7/60 innehåller 69,1%Koppar och 23,3% Zink Sedan finns där 5,7% Tenn och lite silver. Det bör ju ha varit en ganska ljus legering.

Men ändå finns det kopparlegeringar ända från Romarnas dagar genom hela medeltiden som innehåller zink. Men om jag har förstått rätt så hittar man även bly och tenn och massa annat skoj i dessa legerinar. Det kanske inte var så noga vad man hade i bara det såg guldigt ut.
Jag gissar att bronset som fanns i bronsålderns vapen var betydligt nogranare beräknat då det var ämnat för tålighet, inte för dekoration.

Jag har pratat med en del folk som menar att mycket av ströningar, beslag och söljor från vikingatid är av mer mässingsliknande gulmetallegeringar än bronsartade legeringar. Detta står i kontrast till vad en del vikinganissar påstår dvs att brons is the only shit på vikingatiden och inte mässing.

Är det så att det är slarviga analyser av legeringarna som bidragit den senare uppfattningen? Vad har ni kopparlegeringsspecialister för åsikt i frågan?
