De flesta folkliga hundar var små eller medelstorlek och nästan alltid av gårdshundstyp, tex västgöta spetz, dansksvensk gårdshund, spaneil, olika terriers osv
De var hundar som skulle kalara det mesta, jakt, vallning, vakt, barnvakt, sängvärmare osv osv

Skulle tro att hunden på bilden antingen är en spaniel av samma typ som chavalier king charls eller http://vovve.net/Raser/Volpino-Italiano/

Västgötaspetsen skulle jag också klassa som en ras släkt med äldre typer av spetsar. Alla rasbeskrivningar som återger en ras historia ska man ta med en nypa salt, helt klart.

Södermannalagen från 1320-talet statuerar lite taxor beroende på vilken hund man slår ihjäl. Den skvallrar också om mångfalden hundar som fanns.

Dräpt knähund kostade 24 ören
Dräpt mjöhund (typ en vinthund...)kostade 12 ören
Dräpt jakthund kostade 12 ören
Dräpt vallhund kostade 12 ören
Dräpt gårdvar kostade 3 ören

Jag skulle föreslår att du börjar med att fundera på vilken storlek du vill ha.
Dansk svensk gårdshund anses ha medeltida anor:

Spetsar har väldigt gamla anor i norden, har för mig att Matti babblade om att de vanligaste hundbenen i norden kommer ifrån spetsar.
Isländska fårhundar har närmast vikingatida anor:

Andra mindre stylade spetsar är typ finsk lapphund, norsk buhund och liknande.
