<b>To Liquify Horn</b>
Ur: <i>The Strasburg Manuscript- a medieval painters handbook</i>. transl. from the old german by V & R Borradaile. Alec Tiranti London 1966 (Efter avnsitt om såpa/tvåltillverkningen i Appendix, sid 78-79).
Dateringen av Strasburg Manuscriptet är omdiskuterat, men någonstans mellan början av 1300-talet fram till 1400-talet hör det hemma (Tyskland). Tyvärr förlorades originalet i en brand, det enda som återstår är en avskrift, direkt från orginalet, som gjordes i slutet av 1800.talet (finns bevarad på National Gallery Library). Traktatet synes vara en handbok skriven av mästaren (målaren) till sina elever, avsedd som en daglig handledning i verkstaden. Boradaile hävdar i inledningen att det är tydligt att det är skrivet av en praktiserande konstnär. Texten är inte en helthet, utan är uppdelad i flera avsnitt som tillskrivs olika mästare. Översättningen har gjort en smärre omflyttning av några stycken i mitten av texten som inte berör måleritekniker. Dessa stycken tar upp tvåltillverkning, hushållstips (så som hårvård, fläckborttagning etc) och annat presenteras här i ett appendix.
”If you wish to learn how to liquify horn as if it were lead, procure horns at the time of year at which they are shed from the animal and put them in a pot. Then take wood ashes 2 parts, lime 1 part [with water], and pout this all over the [pieces of] horn.Let it boil in the pot and stir it with an iron spoon till it turns to pulp. Shouldyiu wish to make it red, take some red lead [powder] and add it to the horn, stirring the whole together till it becomes red. Then run off the melted horn itno a mould and let it set. Then takehen-bane root and grind it up fine and powder it over the horn to speed updrying and help it to keep its shape. If you scrape it with a good scraper itwill take a polish, and you can make whatever you like out of it; it will be sound and keep well.
If you wish to liquify horn another way, take some and shave it up small and put it in the kind of lye used for soap making. Stir it into this until it dissolves and then boil it up in the lye. Next pour [the horn] into any mould you wish and it will take the shape and later will not warp. Then if you wish to tint it, add powdered pigment to it while it is [still] soft in the pan. The horn will take the colour of whatever pigment you put in. For colouring it is advisable to use white horn rather than black. You can mould coats of arms and fashion trumpets or whatever else you like [with horn treated this way].
Again, if you wish to melt or osften horn so that it can be moulded into any desired form and then harden again, first take as much horn as you require and this must be at least four weeks oldand it must be well kept and covered. Then take 1 lb. of quick limeand half as much willow ash or vine twig ash and 8 oz of tartar and the same quantity of salt and this must all be mixed with together with the horn and then all be boiled up together in a cauldron; then our of the clear lye [by straining] twice in succession ... and keep the liquid well covered in a bowl until it is needed and when one wishes to soften the horn lay it in the liquid in the bowl.
