Jag blev lite ledsen när jag kollade kapitlet om vikingatida svärd, och hittade påståendet att svärden vägde 1,5 - 2 kg. Har författaren hanterat några genuina svärd, och har han kollat något så enkelt som kataloguppgifter på bevarade svärd? 1 - 1,5 kilo ligger sanningen närmare.

Detta avfärdar han som en anakronism från Saxos sida då dessa kämpar inte nämns i själva slaget. Däremot godtar han att det skulle ha deltagit kvinnliga kämpar i en hög position eftersom de nämns vid namn i början och även nämns under själva slaget.
Detta vet jag inte hur jag skall förhålla mig till, är det lösa grunder han antar detta på eller kan man faktiskt dra sådana slutsatser av Saxo Grammaticus berättelse?

Jo, man må jo ha drevet med en eller annen form for ubevæpnet nærkamp under vikingtid også, men såvidt jeg vet kan man ikke spore glíma tilbake til tidligere enn til rundt(overraskende nok) den islandske nasjonalstatens framvekst...

Snorre. Uff da. Snorre er en god kilde til 1200-tallets Island, og mulgiens til ditto norge...men vikingtiden? Hmm...

Jeg blir nødt til å lese denne boka. Men jeg tror jeg kommer til å bli frustrert.
