Gotiska? Hur tänker du nu? Är det Goter som i Folkvandringstida stammar under 400 och 500-talen?
I sådana fall är du hänvisad till kontinentala källor som inte är speciellt heltäckande, t.ex Jordanes [url="http://www.ucalgary.ca/~vandersp/Courses/texts/jordgeti.html"]Getica[/url] - vad det gäller Norden så är de i allmänhet svåra att förankra. Det verkar som att det var vanligt att härleda sina ursprung från Norden bland de folkgrupper/följen som knallade runt i Europa och Nordafrika - ett mode helt enkelt. Om och i så fall vilka grupper som faktiskt kom från Norden är däremot svårare att säga.

Allvarligt talat så vet jag inte riktigt hur jag tänker...
Den främsta anledningen att jag frågar, och hur jag har kommit in på detta ämne är släktforskning och att jag frågar om västgötska gotiska hövdingar är min mormorsfars namn Alarik, (som tydligen betyder gotisk hövding), ursprung Eriksberg i Västergötland.

Det finns även en tämligen ålderstigen bok (som jag inte läst, bara bläddrat i), "Västsvenska vikingatidsstudier : arkeologiska källor till Vänerområdets kulturhistoria under yngre järnålder och äldsta medeltid" av en Harald Wideen (Göteborg, 1955). Där kan du kanske förkovra dig något - men boken är som sagt en smula ålderstigen - tro inte på allt som står där...
